Does the cold weather have you and your family cooped up? We can help. We’ve got the perfect activities to get the whole family moving, grooving and creating this Family Day (Monday, February 18) at the AGO. We’ve already given you a sneak peek at some of the fun things to see and do during your visit, and a highlight you don’t want to miss is the hourly dance lessons taught by FlowHER House Collective in Walker Court.
Founded by Crystal Finn-Dunn, FlowHER House Collective is an all-women street dance group whose primary focus is house dance but it also draws influence from other styles like contemporary, break dance, tap and more! We chatted with Crystal to find out what inspired her passion for house dance and what to expect this Family Day:
AGO: Can you tell us what house dance is?
Crystal: House dance is a street style of dance based on house music that started in the ‘70s in Chicago. The style of dance continued developing in the late ‘70s to early ‘80s in New York City.
AGO: What inspired you to start FlowHER House Collective?
Crystal: The street dance community is very male-dominated and based around crews, freestyle dance and dance battling. I wanted to create a space where women could dance and not just compete, but focus more on creating, collaborating and performing.
AGO: FlowHER has been around for close to a year. Can you share a highlight of the Collective?
Crystal: A definite highlight was going to New York to dance for Ladies of Hip Hop, and then while we were there we also got to attend a legendary weekly party called FunkBox. Dancing in clubs where this type of dance was born was amazing.
AGO: What can kids and families expect from your classes on Family Day?
Crystal: We’re going to give a short performance and then we’re going to teach some fundamental house moves and a brief routine. House dance is super upbeat and high energy, so kids really love it, they also love the music and usually the parents do too!
