A view of Art Toronto 2012 in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
Art Toronto 2012 launched on Oct. 25, 2012, with an opening night preview gala to benefit the AGO. The Gallery’s selection committee chose three works by Canadian artists for the AGO collection: two paintings, by Julia Dault and Stephen Andrews, and a drawing by Itee Pootoogook. The purchases were made possible by funds raised at the preview, with assistance from the Dr. Michael Braudo Canadian Contemporary Art Fund and the assistance of the Joan Chalmers Inuit Art Fund. Below, find out more about these works and see what else happened at the Opening Night Preview. Read the rest of this entry »

On Oct. 11, 2012, we co-hosted our monthly Twitter chat, #ArtHour, with the good people at Art Toronto, one of the most successful art fairs in North America (happening Oct. 26-29 this year). Lots of great information about art collecting emerged from the discussion. Here are some highlights. Read the rest of this entry »

A selection of the work you can see at Art Toronto 2012
Art Toronto — the Toronto International Art Fair — is Canada’s only international art fair, bringing together artists, collectors, curators and galleries from far and wide. In 2012, Art Toronto is focusing on Asia’s incredible contemporary art scene and, as in previous years, its Opening Night Preview on Oct. 25 will raise funds for the Art Gallery of Ontario. Last year’s preview raised over $265,000 (net); funds raised at the event help support the AGO’s exhibition and education programs, with a portion of the proceeds going to purchase works of art at the Fair. For example, the Gallery acquired these three works at the fair in 2007. In 2010, we added 10 new works from the Fair to our collection.
In addition to supporting the AGO, Opening Night Preview attendees also get to experience a special night that celebrates art with live performances and installations. This year’s event will feature:
- A 635 CSi BMW Art Car designed by Pop Art star Robert Rauschenberg (7:30 pm). Created in 1986, this is the first time the car will be exhibited in Canada;
- Gamelatron, a project by A Taylor Kuffner and The League of Electronic Musical Urban Robots that draws on the millennium-old sonic tradition of Indonesia, gamelan, as well as robotics, to construct “the world’s first and only fully robotic gamelan orchestra“; and
- A brand new performance at 7 and 8:30 p.m. by Tibi Tibi Neuspiel and Geoffrey Pugen called Hurdles — watch the video below for a sneak peek. The pair have created many memorable performance pieces, including The Tie Break, in which the pair re-created shot-by-shot the 1980 Wimbledon final match between Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe for Nuit Blanche 2011 crowds.
What can I do at the Opening Night Preview?
Guests get exclusive access to view and purchase works at the Fair before it opens to the public. (See the above slideshow for a taste of the amazing art available at Art Toronto this year.) Of course, it’s a party! So you will also have the opportunity to socialize with artists, collectors and art enthusiasts and enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres.
The Art Toronto 2012 Opening Night Preview takes place from 6:30 to 10 p.m. on Oct. 25, 2012, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. To book tickets click here.
