The AGO is reimagining its look

We have big news! Here at the AGO we aim to bring people together with art to see, experience and understand the world in new ways. That mission takes on a whole new dimension this year as we launch Look:Forward, an exciting reinstallation of the AGO Collection.

Through Look:Forward, you’ll continue to see the works you love, discover new favourites, and best of all: you’ll experience art at every turn.

What’s a reinstallation, you ask? The AGO’s display areas are generally made up of two types of installations: temporary exhibitions—like our just-closed Mystical Landscapes: Masterpieces from Monet, Van Gogh and more—and collection galleries, which show works belonging to the AGO and don’t tend to change very often.

Look:Forward builds on the momentum started with Transformation AGO in 2008 by adding great art to all public spaces (like Michael Snow’s Walking Woman sculptures, visible as soon as you walk in our main entrance), and ensuring that our best works are on display. Many key areas will be completely refreshed.

Led by the vision of the AGO’s curators, we will celebrate exceptional art by presenting the very best of our Collection; inspire meaningful and engaging experiences for you, our visitors; and strive to be relevant to the AGO’s changing audiences by reflecting and strengthening the vibrancy and possibility of Toronto. We will challenge the status quo by aspiring to reflect varied voices that broaden our understanding of the world. Each curator is paying special attention to artists who have been under-represented and deserve recognition.

With increased space committed to the Collection (over 70,000 sq. ft. of new installations across more than 50 galleries), we will present more art from each of our collecting areas: Canadian, European, Modern & Contemporary, Photography, and Prints & Drawings. Already underway, the reinstallation process will be completed in 2018.

Stay tuned to AGOinsider for updates on Look:Forward (including news about the artworks) and special behind-the-scenes glimpses. There is much more to come!  You can also follow hashtags #AGOLookForward and #AGOCollection for real-time updates.

In the meantime, come and see the AGO Collection and pick out your favourites. Galleries that are closed for reinstallation will be clearly marked, and there will be advance notifications on our website at AGO Members see our Collection for free.
